This week I would like to share my thoughts in three tweets and one blog.

This tweet quotes one important sentence in the blog attached: “think before you comment”. As there are tons of chats on Internet every second, one may need to consider the impact of internet communication. Also, there are many cyberbullying cases and some students do not know the consequences of giving a bad comment. Therefore, it is important to teach the student the correct digital etiquette and ethics, components of digital citizenship.

This tweet introduces some ways of integrating of technology in classroom. They include using tablets, mobile phones, videos and digital study halls. I think that the first two kinds of integration may be more important because they allow immediate responses from students. Since almost all students have one smartphone or tablet, teachers can use this opportunity and make them engaged in learning.

This tweet includes a blog which discusses about the barriers to creativity and innovation. Integrating technology in classroom needs creativity and innovation, since often there is no past examples of implementing some specific kind of technology into lessons. I agree to the points that the blog made. Teachers should be aware whether they have followed the wrong way.
This blog argues that social media can be useful in lessons. The author gives seven claims of how social media affect their learning, cognitive thinking and future working environment. I believe many teachers consider social media distracts students from learning. In my opinion, if we use technology properly, it can be helpful in teaching. The first step of introducing social media in lesson is that teachers should teach students the right way of using social media. Teachers may discusses with students about components of digital citizenship in social media. Moreover, supervising students of using social media is also important as to prevent some common misuse of it.
This week I am going to share my thoughts about three tweets and a blog I have read.
This tweet includes a link of the author’s blog that shows the way technology should be used in classroom. As we know there are many advantages of using technology, it is not enough in just focusing on reducing the time teaching. The blog suggests that teaching creativity is the key in the lessons, which I think is important to the teachers. The blog also includes the SAMR model and the ideas from John Seely Brown. Those things are beneficial to teachers.
This tweet includes a link of a webpage that discusses some technology tools which improve classroom collaboration. The information there is valuable because collaboration is essential in many workplace and it helps to improve communication skills. The tools introduced in that webpage are useful and they are free. Teachers can choose to implement these tools in their lessons.
This tweet introduces how to have a classroom makeover using technology. In that webpage, the sentence “Technology isn’t a computer; it’s a way of interacting with oneself and the world” is valuable as it indicates the way we should use for technology. Moreover, the webpage lists five concerns in implementing technology into classrooms. They are good suggestions and teacher may follow them as guidelines.
This blog discusses some myths about online learning. As online learning is getting common nowadays, there are some concerns on it, like whether it is effective in learning. The blog said that the myths are true if online learning does not get it done properly. Also, it gave some good reason in arguing that those myths are not true. To me, online learning is good method in teaching students since it is an approach in UDL. When I become a teacher, I think I may promote online learning to students in order to increase students’ learning attitude.
This week I would like to share another thoughts on another three tweets and one blog
This tweet indicates some sources that are allowed to use free online images. I think this thing is important to teachers because pictures is more worthy then words and many students like using pictures to express their thinking. To avoid the violation of copyright, teachers should teach the students to use free source image. Hence, I think it is important and valuable for teachers
This tweet spots out one thing that teachers should manage the educational content for students. As there are tons of resources from the Internet, teachers have to choose the right and relevant ones for students. The attached link in the tweet suggests the app, “appoLearning” for teachers. I think teachers may try this and see whether it works great.
This tweet includes a blog link inside and the blog gives 10 ways to use google map in the classroom. In everyday life, it is frequent to use google map such as having a visual tour or finding destinations. Therefore, it is good to be used in lessons for geography, history or other course. Also, as google map is very common, students should learn it for some purposes.
This blog discusses about some common mistakes when teachers start a classroom blog. I think it is interesting because even if I do not write it for the educational purpose, I still get this mistake very often. Moreover, for example, in one of the mistakes “making it optional”, if I were the student of that teacher, I would also do not want to view it because I think it may not be fun. Classroom blogs are good for students to review the concepts they had before. Therefore, we should remind ourselves those mistakes so that the classroom blogs have their effect on the students.
I would like to share some of my thoughts from the tweets and one blog entry I read.
This tweet gives an interesting question asking whether we know the usage of games in classroom. From the article which link is given in the tweet, it says that including games in classroom is not as easy as you think. There are some psychology underlying it and “we need to get better at gamification”. I agree those ideas, and it is important because present generation loves to play games. Games may act as a pedagogy tool for them. However, we should try to make games more sense and impact in the class.
This tweet discusses about digital divide. Digital divide refers to situation that some regions have internet connection while some do not. I think this tweet is interesting and the information acts as guidelines for teachers in rural or other areas where internet connection is limited. To my surprise, only “71% of American homes have adopted broadband” (http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/digital-divide). Digital literacy is important in 21st century. Therefore, we should try to engage more students in using technology and the guideline helps the teachers.
Although this tweet is not quite related to education technology, her sentence is so meaningful that I would like to share to you. Nowadays teachers and students are concerned with grades. They think grades are the most important one to evaluate themselves. However, this is not true. If some students have a good grade but they learn nothing, then the teaching will become useless. Teachers should focus more on the students’ learning process and make sure that they are getting something from the materials.
This blog describes how to use google in education. I believe that many people use google in the search engine, email and many other services. Educators can use these awesome features in their teaching. In the blog, it has listed several tools, such as google search, google drive and google maps. The blog tells me that there are many tools in the net I can use; they provide multiple ways of representation and engagement. Also they are handy and easy to use. Hence, there is no excuse that you cannot integrate technology into classes.
In this week, we are required to find 3 another tweets with valuable information and they helped me to shape or understanding of teaching/learning.
This tweet gives an interesting question whether we should force teachers to use technology in class. Obviously, the answer to this question is no. Technology should be used in a way to assist the teaching, but not be just for itself. Traditional teaching has its value which technology cannot be replaced. For example, writing in paper may help children’s cognitive development. Therefore, it is important for instructor decide whether technology should be used in some lessons. Technology is not a “must”.
This tweet offers a great idea that technology extends the methods in teaching. In the past, the teaching practices were limited. But with the help of technology, we are able to work on something that is difficult or restricted. For example, in a geography class, students can have virtual trips to investigate different places in the world, and it is difficult in the past for student to visit the actual places. On the other hand, the first sentence indicates that if technology is used with no purpose, then it will not achieve any goal. Therefore similar to the first tweet, I think technology should be used at the right place.
This tweet talks about an example of using Minecraft in teaching by one teacher. In 21st century, game is one of the important elements that engage students in learning. As there are many educational games available in the net, why we do not include games into the class? From the link, it says that open-ended situations allows students to know how to solve problems differently. Hence, I think that when I become a math teacher, it may be good to add some games such as focusing on computation or use it in demonstrating some situation.
In this week, we are required to find 3 tweets with unique and valuable information about educational technology and digital learners.
This tweet includes a website link which gives 4 ideas in introducing digital citizenship to younger students. This is important for teachers and digital learners since technology is being spread rapidly and children get contact with electronic devices in a very young age. Therefore, it is important for students to understand the concepts of digital citizenship earlier. Also, teachers can treat those ideas as guidelines to teach the students so that the greatest effect can be achieved.
The sentence in this tweet is very reflective and I agree what P21 said. As information expand rapidly in the network, more learning opportunities are provided to the student. Therefore, teaching methods may need to be altered to meet the new requirements in this generation. This tweet would be beneficial to other educators because traditional teaching methods may not work well now. We are responsible to allow new materials and choose appropriate ones for our students.
This tweet brings an important message that special needs students should have a chance to stand out and talk about their own ideas in the classrooms. The tweet includes a link of her blog. In the blog, she introduced the term “biologic user interface” which encourages those students to engage. At the end, she asked that whether we are willing to use technology and help those students. I think this is helpful to teachers because it reminds why we use technology in the teaching environment. Since technology brings opportunities to humans, the special needs kids will now get a chance to learn better now than in the past.

In this video, Temple Gradin talked about how we teach autism or Asperger kids and why we need them in our society. She gave examples that animals think in visuals and she suggested that this would also suit for students, especially the students having autism of Asperger syndrome. Moreover, she said that tho in the world have three kinds of minds: visual thinkers, pattern thinkers and verbal thinkers. Autism or Asperger kids mainly fall on the category of visual thinkers. As Temple said, “The world needs different kind of minds to work together.” So this is why those kids are also important.
Her talk reminds me of Universal Design for Learning. When we become a teacher, we may have to a chance to teach the students with learning disabilities. As the video suggested, the autism or Asperger kids are usually visual thinker. Therefore, using the principles of UDL, we should try to use multiple representation so that students who are weak in some aspects can learn better. In the cases of students with autism or Asperger syndrome, visual representation such as videos or pictures would be a good choice since they prefer to think in images. On the other hand, it is also important to engage the students with learning disabilities. Many of them are actually capable in working, but sometimes they are just being ignored. Therefore, teacher should encourage them by let them answer your questions and work in some small groups so that they are getting interested in learning.
Besides the students which needs special attention, the video also suggests different students have different thinking patterns. Hence, teacher should consider differentiated instruction in classes. For example, when I become a math teacher, my class will have students in different levels. For visual thinkers, I will use diagrams to try to indicate the main points of the question; for pattern thinkers, I will give them more challenging questions as they are good at learning math; for verbal thinkers, I will explain the question to them by showing the flow of ideas in arrows.
